Unlike a construction joint a contraction joint is a joint which is intended to accommodate movement typically in a concrete structure. A joint where initial movement results from shrinkage of the material(s) forming the structure. Hence contraction joints are also sometimes referred to a shrinkage joints. During the concreting process curing takes place which can result in shrinkage of the material.
