How Are Potholes Formed?

Water content and moisture in asphalt (tarmac) cause potholes. Cracks in the surface course (the
top layer) of a road, or footpath allow water or moisture to penetrate the surface. In times of cold
weather this water freezes and expands which disturbs the structural integrity of the road or
footpath. When the ice melts a pothole is created.

Black Patch is asphalt made from a Permanent Cold Lay Surfacing Material (PCSM) and can be laid straight out of the packet. Cold lay asphalt has the obvious health and safety benefits over traditional hot asphalt mixes in excess of 100 degrees centigrade.

Black Patch PCSM is workable at ambient temperature, however, the warmer the temperature the more workable the material becomes. Simply overfill the pothole by 50%. The product should then be thoroughly compacted to achieve optimum performance. It is unlikely that adequate compac-tion will be achieved by hand, and mechanical methods should be utilised.
